Pastoral Care & Spiritual Life

Marymount Hospital is a Catholic hospital that welcomes persons of all faiths. It is located on a campus unique to all of Ohio, with a pre-school and day care center, co-ed high school, senior care facilities for independent, assisted, intermediate, and skilled and memory care as well as a convent for retired sisters, Franciscan Spirituality Center, and various shrines and areas for quiet meditations and prayer.

While Marymount is a Cleveland Clinic regional hospital, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis continue to sponsor the hospital. They had their founding in 1901 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin to minister to Polish immigrants. The sisters began to offer their educational expertise to schoolchildren in Cleveland parochial schools in 1908. In 1926, in support of their continuing commitment to the Greater Cleveland area, Bishop Joseph Schrembs gave permission for the establishment of a Province and Motherhouse in Garfield Heights. In 1938 it was decided by the order to sponsor a hospital on the Garfield campus, and in 1948 construction began.

Today there are over 330 sisters working in various ministries including counselors, teachers, hospital chaplains, nurses, spiritual directors, social workers, school principals, tutoring and child care, parish pastoral associates and religious education directors.

Since Marymount Hospital is a religiously sponsored institution and strives to remain so, a vibrant spiritual life is nurtured on our campus through the following staff, activities and services:

Pastoral Care Staff:
• Sr. Betty Gulick, SSJ-TOSF, Director of Pastoral Care
• Sr. JoAnn Poplar, SSJ-TOSF, Staff Chaplain
• Janet McDonald, Staff Chaplain
• Fr. Ken Wallace, Priest Chaplain
• Fr. Frank Godic, Priest Chaplain (Wednesdays)
• Fr. Tom O'Donnell, Priest Chaplain (Thursdays)

Our Pastoral Care Staff is available for spiritual counseling and support to patients and families as needed.

Prayer Ministry
Prayer requests can be taken over a dedicated prayer line by calling 216.584.7803 or click here to make a prayer request. Prayer requests can be written on special cards provided by the hospital, and mounted on prayer boards located throughout Marymount. Staff members volunteer to pray for these requests daily.

Bereavement
A bereavement support group is offered twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. The group meets for five weeks. Sessions are held at the hospital. Call 216.587.8141 for information.

Employee Remembrance
The Pastoral Care staff offers a memorial service for the loss of a co-worker at Marymount Hospital.  In the Visitation Chapel, employees are invited to write a message to the family of the deceased employee in a Book of Remembrance.  This book is given to the family.

Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine
All patients, visitors and employees of Marymount Hospital are welcome to visit the Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine.  The shrine is located behind the Loretto building in a garden area with landscaped paths and is surrounded by the Stations of the Cross.
